Prevention Before the Pavement

Published by NewStart Magazine on 7 October 2026.

In July 2026, a sudden loss of home became 23 nights of homelessness, despite my continuing to work full time as a mechanic.

In this first-person article, I look at the points where that experience might have been prevented. From the barriers to finding somewhere affordable to live to the gap between losing a home and accessing meaningful help, it raises a question that goes beyond my own circumstances: why do we so often respond to homelessness once it has happened rather than preventing it?

The article is accompanied by four photographs from my documentary project No Fixed Address.
